Medicare SupplementMedicare has deductibles and generally covers 80% of services. This is a considerable gap. Many Medicare beneficiaries choose to purchase a Medicare Supplement also known as a Medigap plan. With a supplemental plan, you typically will pay a higher monthly premium and won't pay for services as you use them.
If you select a Supplement, you will need to get a separate Medicare Part D plan to cover your prescription drugs. You may face a penalty if you do not have a drug plan in place during your initial enrollment period. |
Medicare AdvantageMedicare Advantage is also known as a Medicare Part C plan. Through a contract with Medicare, health plans offer comprehensive coverage that may or may not include prescription drug coverage. In a Medicare Advantage plan you typically pay a lower monthly premium (compared to a Supplement) but you can expect copayments and coinsurance for the services as you use them. These plans also have an annual Out of Pocket Limit which will give you peace of mind if the worse should happen.
